The Difficulty of the Dual Diagnosis

There are many obstacles that recovering addicts face and one of the major ones is dual diagnosis . This term simply means that the person with substance abuse problems also has mental health concerns, which make recovery more difficult. In cases such as these, counselling as well as medication may be needed in order to get the addiction under control. One of the main reasons for a dual diagnosis is that the patient self-medicates their mental disorder through the use of alcohol or drugs. This approach can be very risky and can even be deadly. That is why it is important to understand that there is a mental health concern as well as an addiction and both need to be treated. A lot of drug rehab centers specialize in cases of dual diagnosis.

These types of centers have experience in dealing with both addiction and mental health issues and can develop a strategic recovery plan based on the exact nature of the case. Cocaine addiction is common in a dual diagnosis because it provides the user with a rush that temporarily alleviates the depression or other symptoms they are feeling. However, once the effect of the drug wears off, the initial problem escalates. Dual diagnosis is a very common affliction and must be taken very seriously for it could be a life or death matter.
