I’ve been boarding my horse at barns for a little while now, and I’ve seen a lot of people composting incorrectly.  Knowing a bit about the process is part of identifying good compost, so here is some information about both.

First of all, manure isn’t fertilizer straight out of the horse’s butt.  The composting process requires time to turn manure and other organic waste into fertilizer and topsoil, and then it still has to go through a compost screen in order to be suitable for landscaping and gardening.  So if you are constantly adding to your compost pile, you are keeping it continually in the composting process, and it will never all finish doing what it needs to do.

Several of my horse care books say that the best thing is to have three manure piles — one at each stage of the composting process.  One pile is almost ready, one is composting, and the third is the one you are currently adding to.  Then, by the time the first pile is ready, you are also finished adding to the third pile; you just get the first pile cleared out, and start a new “current” pile.

Once your first pile is done composting, you need to break up all the large chunks and screen out all the other crap that is too big to make good topsoil.  This is done with topsoil screening machines, which can be rented or purchased, depending on how often you plan on using one.  You should also consider your workload — if you just use it occasionally and need extreme portability, a portable screener would probably be best, but a heavier workload might justify a more heavy duty machine.

If everything is done right, at the end of it all you have a valuable natural fertilizer and topsoil — but if you do it wrong, you just have a big pile of poo!

I can’t believe it.  How can they be out of an entire stone?  I mean, if it’s in the catalog, shouldn’t they stock it?  Isn’t that a little bit like lying?  How am I expected to do business with liars?  I simply cannot do it.  It’s that simple.  However, there aren’t any other stone suppliers around here.  Is this God punishing me?  I have scrimped and saved for so long just to afford this, and now I finally have the outdoor kitchen plans and the outdoor lounge plans exactly how I want them.  The out door fireplace is on its way and the outdoor kitchen supplies are on hold at Williams Sonoma.  Why is this happening now?  I’m a person who believes in signs, and at the moment, this is kind of feeling like a very bad one.  Maybe I should not have invested this money.  Maybe my neighborhood housing values will plummet unexpectedly and I won’t get the kind of return I wanted from this project.  Not that it’s only about the return; this is something I’ve wanted for a very long time.  It wasn’t a life long dream, or anything, but this was the vision I had for the backyard; please tell me this isn’t a sign telling me that I can’t have what I want.

I know I’m supposed to stay out of it.  I’m supposed to let my children live their own lives and come back to me when they need me.  I hate that principal; why should it be at their discretion?  Don’t I have rights in this relationship?  I gave birth to all of them.  I raised them.  God knows I loved them, even when they were little hellions.  Now my youngest son, the most promising of all of them, is working as one of those inbound consultants.  He wanted to be a guitar player, a musician, an artist of some sort.  He has that kind of soul, you know?  He is very artistic.  Inside sales outsourcing is not artistic, but it’s good, honest work and pays the bills. I told him that I didn’t want it to be about money, sacrificing his dream for cash, but offering to help support him didn’t go over very well and I don’t want him to quit a good decent job.  I just don’t want him to lose focus of his dram entirely.  He should still play guitar on the side at least.  Marcie’s daughter started as a call center consultant ten years ago, and she’s still there.  She wanted to be a doctor, for goodness sake.  I don’t want to see him give up his dreams for security.  He can do anything he wants!  I’m fifty five, and I’m blogging.  Surely, that’s an indication that the impossible is truly possible.

Going back to college is easy, no matter what your age, or how long since you finished high school.  Look for an online university that offers specialized online college degrees.  These are ideal for people like you who many not have the time for a full course in college.   Plus, there are established universities like the University of Phoenix, that also have an online education program for out of town students and working professionals.

So, get yourself a college education, and watch your life change!
