Things to Buy when Looking for a House Share

If you’re looking for a house share, you’re probably also starting to look for the items that you’ll need when you move into your new place. Maybe you already have some things from your last flat or maybe you have to start over. You just know that there are going to be certain items that you want to have as soon as you find a houseshare and get moved in.

At the same time, you might be holding off on buying anything just yet because you’ve noticed when looking at rooms for rent that most places already have many of the major furniture items you might buy. Here is a list of common items that you should buy while you’re seeking out a flat:

  • Bathroom and hygiene items. You aren’t going to share these with your flatmates so go ahead and stock up on toothbrushes, deodorant and so on.
  • Minimal cleaning items. Don’t buy a lot because the house might already have them but get some basic sponges and soap.
  • Bedroom furniture. Unless you’re looking at a furnished flat, you’ll need your own bedroom furniture like a bed and dresser.
  • Minimal house furniture. You might want to get a small beanbag chair or a desk chair but otherwise wait and see what the flat has.
  • Cooking utensils. Even if your flat has some, it doesn’t hurt to bring your own.
  • Personal kitchen appliances. If you love espresso or deep fried foods, bring an espresso machine or deep fryer. Hold off on common items like toasters and microwaves.

You don’t want to waste money by doubling up on items that your flatmates might already have. Buy the necessities to get moved in and then you can get the rest later.
