Why Are Shower Cubicles A Favorite Hide-and-Seek Spot?

Do you remember playing hide-and-seek as a kid? If so, you can probably recall hiding inside of the bathroom shower on more than one occasion. It’s a common hiding spot for most kids who play the game. But when you think about it, shower cubicles really aren’t a great hiding spot. They don’t provide much protection from the eyes of the kid who is "it". They don’t give you any easy way to sneak to another hiding spot during the game. And it’s easy to get trapped and tagged "it" when you’re cornered into a shower. So why is it that kids frequently find themselves hiding in their showers during this game?
The most common reason is that kids head to the bathroom and then run out of time to leave it before the person who is "it" is done counting. There aren’t too many places to hide in a bathroom. Even the ones that have big cabinets or small closets are usually so stuffed with bathroom accessories that there isn’t room for a kid to get into them. With nowhere left to go and the person who is "it" already seeking, the shower may be an impulse choice.
Another reason that kids may hide in the shower is that they don’t realize what a bad hiding spot it is. It has a door or curtain so it appears that it gives you some cover. It also may seem that it would be easy to get out of it and run to "base" since there are normally two sides of the shower to exit from (left and right). It’s only as an adult that you have the perspective to see how easy it is to get trapped in the shower. But, of course, that’s why it’s kids who play hide-and-seek instead of adults.
